Ruth G Shopmyer

Ruth G. Shopmyer, 93, of Niskayuna, NY, passed away on Monday, January 15, 2018.

Ruth was born on November 10, 1924 in Mount Vernon, NY to Edward and Martha Gertz.

Ruth attended the College of New Rochelle where she graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Math and held a variety of positions in NYC including Bell Telephone and Army Air Corp during WWII. At the urging of her college friends, Ruth accepted a position with GE and relocated to Schenectady.

She met her husband, James Shopmyer, at Zion Lutheran Church. After a brief courtship, the two married in 1951 and Ruth ditched her city roots to fully embrace the farmer’s life.

Ruth was predeceased by her parents; her brother, Albert; and her devoted husband, James. Ruth was the loving mother to Judy Shopmyer and Nancy Richards. She is survived by her daughters; and her grandchildren, Shawn (Johanna) Shopmyer, Marissa (Phil) Francis, Michelle Richards, Juliette Shopmyer and Angelina Shopmyer; as well as several other family and friends too numerous to mention.

Ruth enjoyed sewing, cooking, gardening, soap operas, dinners with family and completing crossword puzzles. She was very loved and will be missed by her family and friends.

Visiting hours will be Thursday, January 18th, 5 to 7 p.m. at the Bekkering-Ellis Funeral Home in Scotia.

Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family.
