Lois Monette Truax was born on December 3, 1923 to Alice and Harvey Monette in Champlain, New York. The oldest of three daughters (Lois, Shirley and Priscilla), Lois graduated with a BS degree in Home Economics from SUNY Plattsburgh.
Using her culinary skills, she worked her way through college as a chef at the Royal Savage Inn. After graduation, she taught Home Economics for 3+ years at Bolton Landing High School, where she met her future husband, Leonard Truax.
After marrying, the couple moved to Schenectady, NY when Leonard began his 40+ years as a toolmaker with General Electric. The family moved to Glenville NY where the three daughters (Diane, Bonnie and Christie) enjoyed country-living and were active in church, school and the Girl Scouts.
After Leonard died in 1990, Lois remained in the family home for a few years. She eventually moved into her daughter's in-law apartment where she enjoyed her independence for the next 20+ years.
One of Lois's greatest joys was traveling the world with the like-minded senior adventurers in the Happy Wanderers travel group. She visited England, France, Spain, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, China, Australia, New England, Canada…..and more!
When the sun was shining, you could find Lois sitting outside, soaking up the warmth and rays. On rainy days, she'd be reading a book by the fireplace. Lois enjoyed and supported the local arts, and dedicated a balcony seat at Proctors Theatre, and a paver at the Rose Garden in Schenectady's Central Park. Life was good; Lois celebrated it!
The consummate organizer, Lois had a well-planned life, and in her final years, she enjoyed a comfortable residency at Brookdale Assisted Living in Niskayuna and Kingsway Nursing Center in Schenectady.
Lois leaves behind a loving family of three daughters (Diane, Bonnie and Christie), three sons-in-law (Tim, Michael and Denis), three grandchildren (Alex, Samantha and Andrea), and one great granddaughter, Anastasia.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, October 26, calling hours 3 to 4:30 p.m., with a service following at 4:30 p.m., at the Bekkering Funeral Home on Mohawk Avenue in Scotia. All are welcome. Cards may be sent c/o BJ Truax, 1935 Heritage Road, Niskayuna, NY 12309.
