Emily M. Clancy, 76, of Scotia, passed away on Sunday, January 22nd following a long illness.
Emily was born on August 28, 1940 in Clydebank, Scotland, a daughter of Herbert and Hannah Maddock (Campbell). She was one of four children, survived only by her sister Mary MacGregor (Ontario, Canada).
Emily was a remarkable woman, arriving to the United States on a boat from Scotland to live as an au pair in Princeton, New Jersey. She never moved back to Scotland, instead relocating to Schenectady, New York where she lived with her Aunt Emily and Uncle John Craig and cousin Suzanne Craig Canell. She worked as a bank teller at the Mohawk National Bank in Schenectady and met John E. Clancy, whom she married in 1965.
She is survived by her husband; and children, John (Susan) and Colleen (Joshua Tulman); as well as her grandchildren, Sophie, Maxwell, Neve and Quinn.
For Emily, education was a mission in her life: She was proactive and availed herself of the course offerings at Schenectady Community College. She stressed to her children that education was the critical path to wide-ranging choice and fulfillment. For many years Emily contributed to the education of children at the United Cerebral Palsy of Schenectady and at The School at Northeast. Emily's activities made a major impact on the lives of the many young people she touched. Emily was an empathetic and supportive person and someone who fully embraced life and loved to laugh. Her laughter took place most often in the company of her lifelong friends, Linda Hayner, Ann Leach and Maryann Ballester. Joy Robb has been Emily's most cherished friend for more than 50 years and remained a stalwart caregiver and supporter of Emily until her last day.
Calling hours will be held on Friday afternoon from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Bekkering Ellis Funeral Home, 1 Mohawk Ave., Scotia, NY 12302. A private family service will be held.
