Anna E. Martinec Entered into eternal rest after a brief illness, Anna E. (Anne Ring) Martinec passed away peacefully on December 18, 2024, at 98 years of age.
Anne, a resident of Scotia for virtually all her life, grew up on Vine Street as the baby of the family and the only girl with four older brothers. She attended Sacandaga School as a kindergartener, the first year the school opened. Anne graduated from Scotia High School in 1944 and was proud of her good grades and membership in the Honor Society. During high school she worked part time at the Scotia Bank. With most of her male classmates graduating early to join in the war effort, Anne started her career the day after graduation at the telephone company in Schenectady, working her way up to the position of Supervisor.
In 1949, Anne married Edward W. Martinec, a well-known and well-liked Scotia proprietor whom she had known since her early childhood. She would continue to work at the telephone company until expecting their first child.
Anne was very proud of her three daughters and took great care in supporting her husband and their family business, Martinec's Market.
After the children grew up and left the home, Anne was more often seen alongside her husband in the grocery store: a true "Mom and Pop" establishment, until their retirement in 1985 when the business was closed.
Anne was artistic, an avid reader, an agreeable mountain hiker when coaxed by her husband, a late-in-life gardener, a grandmother and great grandmother who truly enjoyed babies and children. She was a life-long member of St. Joseph's Church in Scotia, at one time teaching religious instructions and being a member of a committee to visit and assist shut-ins.
Anne was predeceased by her husband of 60 years, her daughter Elizabeth Parsons and her grandson, William Wagner. She is survived by her daughters Patricia D'Alessandro and Christine Martinec Vlahides, her grandchildren Melissa Belrose (Christoph) and Zebulon Parsons (Leora), and her nieces, nephews and great grandchildren.
Services will be held Friday, January 10, 2025 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 231 2nd Street, Scotia. An opportunity for visitation will begin at 10:00 followed by a mass of Christian Burial at 11:00. Burial will immediately follow at Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery in Niskayuna.
In lieu of flowers, Anne wished to have donations made to St. Joseph's Indian School, P.O. Box 326, Chamberlain, SD, 57326, or to St. Joseph's Church at the above address (zip 12302).
